Visit by Calgary Fundraisers

We were recently very pleased to welcome to Sosúa a group of our supporters from Calgary who have helped raise funds through the MTCervecaria events organised by Thomas and Maureen Behl.  During their visit the team provided a lunch for children at a local school.  Here is Thomas and Maureen's report on this event.

"MT Cervezaria, who raised 68,000 pesos in June of 2009 with their first fundraiser brought a group of the participants and donators to Sosua to experience how their donations have made a difference in and around Sosua. With the approval and the help of the board of SosuaKids it was decided that making and providing a Canadian school lunch would seem appropriate. The lunch consisted of a ham & cheese sandwich (something many children in the DR have never eaten), a juice, and a big apple (often given to children as Christmas gifts because of the high cost). Also included was a small package of "pop rocks", which led to many puzzled but delighted faces. The school chosen had enrolement of 190 children.
The team started by making the lunches and bagging them in brown paper bags, a short trip to the school, and then the fun of handing out the lunches to the children. The board members set up the entire outing including transportation which made the entire experience so positive for all involved. After lunch, the team played with some of the children who also took some team members to their homes to show them where they live.
The entire team looks forward to our second ANNUAL fundraiser slated for mid June 2010 in Calgary. With the newly inspired excitement of the young team, MT Cervezaria hopes to increase their donation. MT Cervezaria would like to thank all the team members who came and helped and also those still freezing in Calgary who were unable to attend. Also, thanks to the board members who organized and helped with the various aspects of this fun outing that shows us all how the money that is raised is spent.
